What Happens During a Criminal Trial?
By Yvonne Garbett, Esq.

Most criminal cases resolve before trial, but some proceed to hearings or jury trials.
Trials can feel intimidating for defendants unfamiliar with the legal system. During a criminal trial:
Prosecutors present evidence
Witnesses testify
Defense attorneys cross-examine witnesses
The defense may present evidence or testimony
A judge or jury determines guilt or innocence
The prosecution carries the burden of proving the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
Trials often involve complicated legal procedures involving:
Objections
Evidence rules
Jury instructions
Constitutional protections
Preparation and strategy are critical in any criminal trial.
