Defense perspective
Both sides of the courtroom
Yvonne F. Garbett, Esq.: former Rockland County Assistant District Attorney (2002–2006) and former Rockland County Assistant Public Defender (2013–2015). Admitted to the New York bar in 2002; in private criminal defense practice since 2006. Criminal defense, DWI and family law in Rockland, Orange and Westchester Counties.
The prosecution perspective
Yvonne served as a Rockland County Assistant District Attorney from 2002 to 2006. That experience brings a perspective on how a criminal case is presented: what the prosecution must prove and whether evidence supports each element of a charge. A defense should not treat an accusation as an established fact.
The public defense perspective
She also served as a Rockland County Assistant Public Defender from 2013 to 2015, part-time alongside her private practice. Representing the person accused means listening to their account, explaining their options, and considering how case decisions may affect their work, family, and future.
How that informs defense strategy
Defense preparation involves reviewing the case documents and evidence, identifying legal issues for possible motions, evaluating negotiation options, and preparing for trial when appropriate. Police and witness accounts need examination, not automatic acceptance. When errors or inconsistencies emerge, they should be investigated and raised through the appropriate process.
Your case, not a formula
Experience on both sides of the courtroom does not guarantee an outcome or imply influence over a prosecutor or judge. Strategy depends on the facts, evidence, law, and the client’s priorities. Yvonne’s private criminal defense practice began in 2006.
