What Happens if Police Come to Your Home?
By Yvonne Garbett, Esq.

Few situations are more stressful than law enforcement unexpectedly arriving at your door.
Many people panic and are unsure whether they must allow officers inside.
In general, police officers need:
A warrant
Consent
Or a legal exception
to enter a home.
Individuals should remain calm and avoid physically interfering with officers. However, people also have constitutional protections regarding searches and questioning.
Common mistakes include:
Consenting to searches without understanding rights
Making emotional statements
Attempting to explain too much
Allowing police to search voluntarily
Even well-intentioned conversations can later become evidence in a criminal case.
If police contact you regarding an investigation, it is important to understand your rights before answering questions.
