What NOT to Say to Police During an Investigation
By Yvonne Garbett, Esq.

Many people believe they can "talk their way out" of an investigation. Unfortunately, speaking too freely with police often creates more problems.
Even innocent individuals sometimes make statements that:
Are misunderstood
Contain inconsistencies
Accidentally provide damaging information
People frequently try to explain themselves because they are nervous or afraid. However, investigators are trained to gather evidence and statements that may later be used in court.
You have constitutional rights, including:
The right to remain silent
The right to an attorney
Remaining calm and respectful is important, but so is understanding that you are not required to answer investigative questions without legal representation.
